Nu Metal might not be on everybody’s music shopping list. But, what Downward Spiral may lack in mainstream taste, I wager, voids that caveat with it’s pure eclectic grit, technical prowess and engaged, clever polarised composition. Hitting play, for the 1st 9 ‘detuned’ seconds of electric ‘feedback’, you could be forgiven for having no idea what might be coming next. Too right also! The well balanced drums begin to drop, then kicks in an insanely cool and aggressive power guitar riff. I reminisced of the electro rock band Blue Stahli, they do a lot of these kind of hooks, accompanied to fusion electronic/rock beats, and do it very well might I add. 8 bars of the sublime (almost industrial like) hook and the songs 1st verse flows in, by contrast, much more mellow. Displacement to a slightly more subtle rhythm ensues (beautifully I might add too). A melodic guitar plays more melancholic tones, whilst distorted stabs from the other keep your intrigue.

What I liked most about the song in general, apart from it’s extremely catchy chorus was (and I could use a better term here)  just how damn ‘tidy’ (well constructed) and intuitively mastered the song was! Excellent clarity! The detuned guitar intro was never out of place either, as it makes a clever resurgence in the songs middle placement, playing detuned undertones. And, I really did love that off-key artistry also, it reflected purpose almost by means of controlled chaos, which, only added to my interest. The middle eight was refreshing and a lovely breakdown, progressing nicely to some heavy filtering,  just before the final tasty crescendo.

This tune is not one to disappoint, especially for you metal, industrial, or even big beat/rock fusion enthusiasts out there, the hook is just je ne se quoi! It all comes down to taste, obviously. But, even some of you EDM or Pop diehards (I too like my EDM) might just appreciate the excellent composition this song has to offer, if nothing else. And, simply just for that, I can not really fault “Downward Spiral” by Wrong Technique. It might not be a play me 10 times in a row kinda song, but it’s definitely a play me ‘every time I get in my car for a drive’ kinda song. And, that is a meaningful compliment.
